The band was formed from a band called Chaotic Noise, an L.A. punk band that was formed in 1983. It consisted of Dan Clements, Adam Siegel and a former drummer. They had not a permanent bassist, and people just figured they were unstable. They decided to change the name and start fresh, and they taught one of their roadies, Shaun Ross, how to play bass. With the addition of drummer Greg Saenz, the line-up was stable for a couple of years and recorded some demos that got their name circulating around the underground.
Interesting Note: In 2003, ex-members of Excel considered legal action against Metallica over the song "Enter Sandman", which they claim borrows heavily from the Excel's song "Tapping Into The Emotional Void", originally included on "The Joke's On You" LP, released in 1989, two years before the release of Metallica's Black Album.
Members of the band had said in interviews or in discussion groups that an Excel reunion may or may never happen. Recently, Dan Clements joined forces with former Suicidal Tendencies members Grant Estes, Amery Smith and Louiche Mayorga and formed the band AgainST. Despite rumors, he did not reform Excel under that name in any way, shape or form, due to the fact that he insists that AgainST does not want to be be billed as Excel for the shows or referred to as an Excel reunion, as he does not want to cheapen the Excel name. Another reason for that could be that Adam Siegel, Shaun Ross and Greg Saenz are not present.
