“joel,” named after his long-lost friend, sees glaive reflect on the pain of losing a close friend. Unlike in other tracks where he mentions his friend, however, he is now focusing on the negative feelings instead of turning them into positive things.
Mention of said friend can be found throughout glaive’s discography, noteably in “problems,” where he says:
‘I found myself inside of a bottle on my shelf
And I made a couple songs for you, Joel
'Cause the last thing you told me was to give 'em hell
And now you ain't with me and it's clear to see
That I barely sleep and I barely eat
And when I heard that news, I could barely speak
And I guess Percocets are more important to you’
Similarily, glaive reiterates the sentiment in “naturale”:
‘Like Joel, I know one day that we'll have to give 'em Hell’
His passing is also noted in “dont call my phone”:
‘Shoutout to my brothers and the others, R.I.P. to Joel, oh’
..and finally in “its all a waste”:
‘I'm just tryna put on for Joel 'cause he where heaven is’
“joel” was first previewed across social medias once on September 10, 2024.
